How it Works
GoogleDuel is programmed in PHP, an open source scripting language for creating dynamic web site applications. It makes use of "web services", which are emerging standards allowing communication between resources on the web (such as Google) and applications like GoogleDuel. GoogleDuel uses the SOAP protocol, XML, and the PHP Pear::SOAP library developed by Shane Caraveo and Arnaud Limbourg. The site also makes extensive use of Javascript, CSS, HTML, and a database called MySQL.
For interested programmers, I have made available some sample source code which illustrates how to use the Pear::SOAP library to call the Google API from PHP.
Presentations
I spoke about Web Services and some of the technologies behind GoogleDuel at the PHP Vancouver Conference, held in Vancouver, BC, Canada. You're welcome to look at a recap of my presentation here.
